Montparnasse is an area in Paris, Aubervilliers is a suburb to the north of Paris. I don't have any experience of Aubervilliers, but I did live in Montparnasse for a couple of years. Plenty of restaurants, public transport (metros and buses), theatres (some a bit on the risky side) cinemas etc. Its very lively and safe and you can walk out of your door and find yourself in the thick of things. I also found where I lived to be much friendlier than other areas of Paris - the baker knew who I was, whether I liked my baguette well baked or not, neighbours were friendly. I would go for Montparnasse everytime, but then maybe you should speak to somebody who knows Aubervillier!
