what is the best way to start learning french?

I learnt a little bit of French at school, and now some 15 years later I want to start learning it again. I fully intend to practice with French speakers, but would like to get some ideas on the best things I can be doing. I will be learning at home, and would like to get a heads up on the language before testing my skills with a native speaker.

Try borrowing a language course from your local library to see how things go. If this isn’t possible, then see if you can manage to acquire a personal listen-and-learn system of studying, so that you can practise in the privacy of your home. It is vitally important not to neglect the learning of grammar in order to gain confidence.

There is no need to wait until you are perfect before trying out what you have learned!
