Why is it said that France was a rich nation with an impoverished government during the French Revolution?

i have an AP EURO question i need help with ……… im trying to figure out Why is it said that France was a rich nation with an impoverished government during the French Revolution? and possibly how the financial weakness of the monarchy laid the foundations of the revolution of 1789…… Thanks for any help

    Because of two reasons -

    1. The monarchy had spent unheard sums on building magnificent residences by any standard

    2. The displacement of national resources was only further compounded by the chaos of anarchy when the people rebelled and deposed the royalty and nobility.
