French/English relations have been a dominant issue throughout history, not just during the 20th Century. Both had conflicting naval, territorial, and imperial goals that often led to clashes. Over several centuries, both countries had aspirations that conflicted. Both were major colonial powers in North America in the 18th through 20th centuries, and in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. A bit earlier, they had conflicting intentions in Europe. In addition, there was a perception among some Englishmen and Americans that the French were ungrateful after the USA and the UK, along with French, Polish, Canadians, and other Allies, liberated France from the Nazis in 1944. This resentment was further fueled when the French pulled out of active military participation in NATO in the 1960′s.
