Why was there trash thrown in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre?

In 2001, my husband and I visited the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Of course, we visited the famous Mona Lisa by De Vinci. In front of the painting was a small roped off area so visitors would not stand too close to the painting. Within the small roped off area was trash….like beverage cups, food wrappings and mostly museum pamphlets. It was really weird because the gallery where the painting was displayed was immaculate. Why there? Why did the guards standing so nearby allow it? Does anyone know?

The Mona Lisa is an icon of human culture. It is the most well known of all images. I don’t know the circumstances around the litter but the guards will not chose to disregard the safety of the painting for the disposal of waste. You don’t know the circumstances surrounding the littering episode.

Why did you see litter six years ago? Is that your question?
